How can PLCs collaborate on implementation of content area literacy strategies to promote student motivation?
Motivation
The greatest initiator of student motivation is tapping into their interests. A curriculum that is centered on the interests of each student would lead to dozens of individual curriculum, thus would be unfeasible. The first step towards creating quality student motivation, particularly on a literacy basis, is to utilize a reader interview. These interviews would need to be read and discussed through the PLC to appropriately group students for their work. In our Wolfpack Readers program, this was chance for the teachers to gain some insight into the interests, strengths and habits of their students. From here the teacher would then be able to organize a curriculum path that would best fit their classes. Using work from the Teacher as Researcher course , the students embarked on a six week long social justice research project that utilized social media and current social justice issues. They were able to research an issue and apply it to two core texts through a variety of platforms. |
